Glucophage is a sugar lowering drug taken orally, whose active ingredient is metformin ( biguanide ). The drug has a hypoglycemic action, increases glucose disposal in muscle tissue cells, increases peripheral tissues' sensitivity to insulin, as result reducing insulin resistance. Inhibits carbohydrates' absorption in the intestine, inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis, normalizes lipid metabolism by lowering triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in the blood. It doesn't affect pancreas insulin's allocation and doesn'е provoke hypoglycemia.
Glucophage treatment's prescription is second diabete's type ( insulin-dependent diabetes ), especially for obese patients, in case of results' absence from a diet exercise's combination. It can be administered to patients with first diabete's type to reduce the daily insulin ( especially in obesity and secondary insulin resistance development ).
Mode of application:
Dose receiving mode and treatment's duration depend on compensation's degree of carbohydrate metabolism and is determined by the attending physician. Glucophage is taken inside, during or after a meal. Generally, treatment is initiated with 500-1000 mg per day, for two weeks. After that dose is gradually increased until the stability compensation of hyperglycemia. The max daily dose isn't more than 3000 mg per day for adults and 1000 mg per day for elderly patients.
